Florida's Atlantic Coast
The Gulf Stream runs close to the beach
From Cape Canaveral south to Palm Beach the Gulf Stream squeezes shipping into a narrow lane close inshore.
Spanish plate fleets, coastal steamers and modern freighters all used the same corridor, and hurricanes coming up from the Bahamas caught them against a lee shore with reefs and bars close to the beach. The 1715 and 1733 fleet losses are documented here in state archaeological records, and later steam losses lie a short distance offshore.
