The Vessel and Her Loss
Built in the Netherlands in 1961 as the harbor tug Arikok for the Aruba Ports Authority, the vessel was later seized by the U.S. Coast Guard while smuggling roughly 15 tons of marijuana. Fort Lauderdale businessman Dale Scutti purchased the forfeited tug at auction and had it sunk near his beachfront home in memory of his son Jay, an avid diver. The tug was sent to the bottom with dynamite on September 19, 1986. She now sits upright as the anchor of a small Fort Lauderdale wreck cluster.
