The Vessel and Her Loss
SS Copenhagen was a steel-hulled, schooner-rigged steamship built in 1898 in Sunderland, England, and registered to a Glasgow shipping company for transatlantic cargo runs. In 1900, just two years after launching, she struck a reef off present-day Lauderdale-By-The-Sea and sank. Her broken hull remains visible in shallow water on Pompano Ledge. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and dedicated as a Florida Underwater Archaeological Preserve in 1994.
