New York Harbor
The crowded gateway of American immigration and trade
The busiest harbor in America also became the scene of its deadliest maritime disaster.
Steam ferries, excursion boats and freighters crowded the East River and Upper Bay through the nineteenth century. Collisions and fires in these crowded waters produced some of the worst death tolls in American maritime history.
