The Vessel and Her Loss
The Ayuruoca was a steel cargo steamship built in 1912 and sailing under the Brazilian flag. Outbound from New York in June 1945 she was struck in fog and sank at the approaches to the harbour. The wreck lies in deep water off Sandy Hook, where drums of cargo gave rise to the name divers still use for her.
