The Vessel and Her Loss
On the morning of September 9, 1932, the steamer Observation left a Bronx dock near East 138th Street carrying more than 100 laborers, most of them ironworkers, to a construction site on Rikers Island. Minutes after departure, her boiler exploded, tearing the vessel apart and killing 72 men. A subsequent trial found that a patch on the boiler had been concealed from inspectors, and her captain and owner faced criminal charges.
