Long Island & the New York Approaches
The doorway to the busiest harbor in America
Everything bound for New York crossed the shoals and bars off Long Island and Sandy Hook.
Traffic density is the hazard here as much as the sandbars: converging steamer tracks, fog off Montauk, and a south shore of shifting outer bars where a vessel driven ashore breaks up quickly. Wartime added submarine attacks in both world wars. The result is a coast lined with wrecks from immigrant liners to coal schooners, many of them well known to divers.
