The Lake Erie Islands
The shallowest of the Great Lakes
Lake Erie is shallow enough that a hard wind builds a steep, breaking sea within hours.
Between the Bass Islands, Kelleys Island and the Pelee passage, deep-draft vessels threaded reefs and rock ledges on the busiest freight route in the region. Shallow water makes Erie storms abrupt and violent, ice takes vessels in the shoulder seasons, and fog settles over the island passages in spring. Wrecks here are close inshore and often intact in cold, fresh water.
