The Vessel and Her Loss
Built at Detroit in 1875, the 221-foot wooden propeller John Pridgeon, Jr., ended her career as a lumber hooker. On September 18, 1909, laden with lumber, she began leaking in heavy seas off Cleveland as a westerly gale rose. The gale turned her broadside to the wave troughs and capsized her. The steamer Maryland, nearby, picked up her crew. Her wreck was found two days later and declared a total loss.
