The Vessel and Her Loss
Built in 1872 at Black River, Ohio, the 184-foot wooden bulk freighter Sarah E. Sheldon was bound from Cleveland to Sarnia with coal on October 20, 1905, when a huge gale drove her onto a reef near Lake Breeze, Ohio. She broke up only 600 feet offshore, and Life-Saving Service crews rescued the survivors. She was 33 years old and had been heavily repaired in 1883.
