The Vessel and Her Loss
Built at Cleveland in 1868 as a passenger steamer, the 135-foot City of Concord later served as a wooden bulk freighter. Upbound with coal on September 27, 1906, near Point Pelee, she was struck by a gale and sprang a leak. Water drowned her fires, leaving her pumps without steam, and she sank. The crew reached shore in a tiny yawl with only one oar; the source records two lives lost. She had already survived a fire near Toledo in 1893.
