The Hawaiian Islands
Reef, surf and a mid-ocean crossroads
The islands were a provisioning stop for whalers, a hub of the sugar trade and a naval crossroads.
Fringing reef surrounds most anchorages, trade-wind swell breaks heavily on the windward shores, and channels between islands funnel wind and current. Vessels that lost steerage near shore were on the reef almost at once. Whalers, inter-island steamers, sailing freighters and wartime losses all lie in these waters.
