The Vessel and Her Loss
Built on the West Coast of the United States as the steam schooner Cosmopolis, the vessel was brought into Hawaiian inter-island service as the steamer Kauai, carrying sugar and cargo for the Kohala Coast plantations. She sank at Mahukona Harbor on the Island of Hawaii in 1913. The wreck was later the subject of a detailed East Carolina University maritime archaeology thesis confirming her identity through historical and archaeological evidence.
