The Vessel and Her Loss
Built as the motor schooner Mary in Kiel in 1920, the ship passed through several names and owners in the Baltic before being acquired by the Lahaina Restoration Foundation in 1972 and refitted as Carthaginian II, a whaling-era museum ship in Lahaina Harbor. She served as Maui's whaling museum for over three decades. In 2005, after being retired, she was towed off Puamana and deliberately sunk to form an artificial reef.
