Lake Ontario & the St. Lawrence
Deep water at the head of the seaway
Lake Ontario is deep, cold and open, and the river that drains it narrows into a maze of channels and islands.
Grain and coal fleets crossed Lake Ontario on long open runs with few harbours of refuge, and autumn gales caught schooners far from shelter. At the eastern end the lake empties into the St. Lawrence through the Thousand Islands, where narrow channels, shoals and current claimed vessels that strayed from the marked track. The lake's depth means many losses went down intact and were never found for a century.
