The Vessel and Her Loss
Queen of the Lakes was a three-masted wooden schooner built in 1857 and later owned by Richardson & Sons of Kingston, Ontario. On November 27, 1906, she left Charlotte, New York, bound for Kingston with a cargo of coal when a gale swept Lake Ontario. She foundered the next day off Sodus Point, though all six crew survived. Researchers located her wreck in 2011, and it now lies within the Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary.
