San Francisco & the Northern California Coast
Fog at the gate
Everything bound for San Francisco had to find one gap in a mountain coast, often in fog.
The bar outside the Golden Gate breaks in a heavy swell, summer fog can hide the headlands for days, and the coast north and south of the gate is rock, cliff and outlying reef. Gold rush traffic put inexperienced crews on this shore in numbers, and the losses run from side-wheel steamers to sailing ships and freighters.
