The Vessel and Her Loss
Yungay was a 165-foot steel coasting steamer built in 1908. Purchased by J. S. Webster in late 1927 and freshly surveyed and repaired under Lloyd's classification, she struck a reef off Eleuthera Island on 7 February 1928 during severe weather and became a total loss. The wreck became the subject of a US federal admiralty limitation-of-liability case brought by her owner and cargo claimants.
