The Vessel and Her Loss
RMS Tweed was a Royal Mail Steam Packet Company paddle steamer on the Gulf of Mexico mail service. In January 1847 she struck Alacranes Reef and was wrecked; passengers and crew are reported to have gotten off safely. The reef's remote position and low profile made it a persistent hazard to the mail steamers of the era.
