The Vessel and Her Loss
Nuestra Señora de las Maravillas served as vice-flagship of Spain's Tierra Firme treasure fleet, carrying silver bullion and coin from Cartagena toward Cadiz. On the night of 4 January 1656, she was struck by the fleet's own flagship in the Bahama Channel; her hull breached, she struck a reef on the Little Bahama Bank and sank within half an hour. Of roughly 650 people aboard, only about 45 survived. Spanish wreckers recovered an estimated five million pesos of silver over the following decades, and the site has been the subject of licensed modern archaeological survey by Allen Exploration since 2019.
