The Vessel and Her Loss
Built at South Portland, Maine, by Andrew J. York, who also sailed as her master, the schooner Benjamin C. Cromwell was completed in 1890. On August 1, 1899, she lay moored at Dog Island, Florida, loading or already loaded with lumber and naval stores, when the season's second hurricane struck St. George Island and Apalachee Bay. She was one of about fifteen vessels beached there and judged unsalvageable.
