The Vessel and Her Loss
Yawah was built as part of the hurried World War I Emergency Fleet Corporation wooden shipbuilding effort meant to counter German submarine losses. She saw little service before becoming surplus at war's end. Towed to Mallows Bay on the Potomac River, she was subjected to failed scrapping operations and today rests as part of the Ghost Fleet within a protected national marine sanctuary.
