The Vessel and Her Loss
Built in 1854, the three-masted schooner Wollin was carrying slabs and potatoes from Frankfort, Michigan, to Milwaukee on the night of April 29, 1897, when a strong northeast gale blew away her canvas and her yawl, leaving her helpless offshore. At 3 a.m. she went aground near Sheboygan's North Point, where an engineer at the city pumping station spotted her. Rescuers took off all five men. She was abandoned as a total loss and broke up over the summer.
