The Vessel and Her Loss
In 1758, during the French and Indian War, British and provincial forces sank a group of bateaux in Lake George intending to recover them the following season. The boats were never raised. Diver Terry Crandall, working under the Adirondack Museum, found the wrecks between 1963 and 1964. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 as the Wiawaka Bateaux Site.
