The Vessel and Her Loss
On November 15, 1883, the schooner Wabash was among a string of consorts towed by the powerful tug Samson, trying to reach Grand Island in a raging snowstorm, when she ran aground at Chapel Beach on the Pictured Rocks shore. The Samson rescued her crew, but the Wabash and her cargo were a total loss. Her broken remains lie scattered with her cargo at Chapel Beach.
