USS Yankee
Auxiliary Cruiser · United States · Lost 1908 · Buzzards Bay & Vineyard Sound
The former liner El Norte foundered in Buzzards Bay after being refloated from Spindle Rock in 1908.

The Vessel and Her Loss
Built as El Norte in 1892, the vessel was acquired by the United States Navy in 1898 and renamed Yankee. It served in the Spanish-American War and later trained naval personnel. It grounded on Spindle Rock in September 1908 and was refloated on December 4. Heavy seas caused it to founder under tow the following day.
