Patrol Boat · United States · Lost 1944 · The Outer Banks
The Coast Guard cutter Jackson capsized in the 1944 Great Atlantic Hurricane; twenty of forty-one aboard survived.

The Vessel and Her Loss
USCGC Jackson was built at Camden, New Jersey, in 1926 and commissioned on March 14, 1927. After Prohibition enforcement off the East Coast, she served on the Great Lakes in rescue, fisheries patrol and maritime law enforcement. Under Navy operational control during World War II, she escorted convoys and conducted antisubmarine patrols. On September 14, 1944, Jackson and Bedloe were assisting the torpedoed George Ade when hurricane seas overwhelmed the cutters. Jackson capsized and sank; twenty of the forty-one aboard survived. NOAA documents her divided wreck southeast of Nags Head.
