U-1105
Submarine · Germany · Lost 1949 · Chesapeake Bay
A rubber-skinned German U-boat, surrendered at war's end and later sunk as a Navy target in the Potomac River.

The Vessel and Her Loss
U-1105, nicknamed Black Panther for its distinctive black rubber (Alberich) anti-sonar coating, surrendered to Allied forces in May 1945. The U.S. Navy studied the boat's sound-absorbing hull material before using it in torpedo and target trials. It was scuttled in the Potomac River off Piney Point, Maryland, in 1949 and now rests largely intact.
