The Vessel and Her Loss
The Volga was a three-masted sailing vessel carrying indentured laborers from Calcutta bound ultimately for Jamaica when she called at Saint Lucia in 1893. At anchor in Castries Harbour, a shift in wind swung her onto rocks and she sank without loss of life. Long a hazard to navigation, the wreck was later demolished with explosives and now lies broken on the harbour floor.
