The Vessel and Her Loss
Strathairly was a British iron freight steamer carrying iron ore from Santiago, Cuba, to Baltimore when she ran ashore in dense pre-dawn fog near the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station on North Carolina's Outer Banks on March 24, 1891. Despite a rapid response from three nearby Life-Saving stations, nineteen of her twenty-six crew died in the heavy surf, making it the U.S. Life-Saving Service's most disastrous wreck of that year.
