The Vessel and Her Loss
Stormy Petrel was a purpose-built iron blockade runner constructed on the Clyde in 1864 for the Anglo Confederate Trading Company. On her run toward Wilmington on 7 December 1864 she was run ashore near New Inlet and fired on by Union gunboats. A storm completely wrecked the grounded hull within days, and her remains have since been studied by maritime archaeologists alongside the nearby wreck of the runner Condor.
