The Vessel and Her Loss
Eagle was built around 1901 through a share subscription among Winslow residents on Bainbridge Island, who needed regular transportation to Seattle. Christened by a local resident who scattered flowers rather than break a bottle, the vessel ran a nearly flawless service for about two years. On March 12, 1903, she caught fire while tied up at the Winslow dock and burned to the water's surface as residents watched.
