The Vessel and Her Loss
Built in 1887 with a steel hull by Harlan & Hollingsworth, New York ran as a Hudson River Day Line steamer for 21 years. Laid up for the off-season at Marvel's shipyard in Newburgh, she caught fire overnight on October 21, 1908. With her boilers already drained for inspection, her own pumps could not fight the blaze, and she burned to the water's edge; four men sleeping aboard died.
