The Vessel and Her Loss
Originally built in Denmark as the Ohio, the ship later sailed as the Greek freighter Stavronikita. In 1976, while carrying cement from Ireland to the Caribbean, a fire killed six crew and left the vessel adrift for days before rescue of the survivors. Abandoned by her owners, she was purchased at auction by Barbados's Parks and Beach Commission and deliberately sunk off Carlisle Bay in 1978 to create an artificial reef.
