The Vessel and Her Loss
Rose Castle was a Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation ore carrier loading at the Wabana anchorage on Bell Island on the night of November 2, 1942, when U-518 slipped into the harbour and fired on the anchored ships. Two torpedoes struck Rose Castle, sinking her with the loss of 28 crew. The Free French vessel PLM 27 was sunk moments later in the same attack, and the submarine escaped undetected on the surface.
