The Vessel and Her Loss
Lord Strathcona was chartered to carry iron ore from Bell Island's Wabana mines when the German submarine U-513 attacked the anchorage on the morning of September 5, 1942. Struck in the same brief action that sank Saganaga, she went down in Conception Bay, though no crew deaths were recorded aboard her. The attack demonstrated how exposed Newfoundland's iron ore trade was to enemy submarines operating close inshore.
