The Vessel and Her Loss
The iron steamer Czarina left Coos Bay for San Francisco on January 12, 1910, loaded with cement, coal, and deck lumber despite a fierce gale building offshore. Struck by heavy seas soon after crossing the bar, she was driven onto a sand spit and capsized within a few hundred yards of shore. Twenty-three of the twenty-four men aboard drowned as horrified onlookers, including some crew members' wives, watched from the beach.
