The Vessel and Her Loss
SS Bayrupert was launched in 1926 at Ardrossan as the largest and most modern ship commissioned by the Hudson's Bay Company, intended to supply fur trade posts in Labrador, Hudson Strait, and Baffin Island. On July 22, 1927, on only her second trading voyage, she struck Clinker Rock off Cape Harrigan on the Labrador coast and was wrecked. Her company of about 80 reached Farmyard Island by lifeboat and were rescued by the steamer Kyle. The loss ended her career after barely a year of service.
