The Vessel and Her Loss
Built in 1889, the two-masted scow schooner Silver Lake left Manitowoc on May 27, 1900, with 80 cords of maple for Racine. Early the next morning First Mate Eastman was sounding her foghorn in dense fog when he heard a steamer's signal drawing closer. The crew had just been roused when the steel bow of the new car ferry Pere Marquette burst out of the fog and nearly cut her in two. Eastman was thrown overboard and never found; the ferry rescued the others. Silver Lake drifted upside down before sinking.
