The Vessel and Her Loss
The ship Nancy, carrying a cargo of bricks, went aground at Emerson's Rocks on Plum Island on December 3, 1849. All five members of her crew died in the wreck, part of a long record of vessels lost on the treacherous Ipswich Bar and adjoining Plum Island shore documented by local historians. The loss came within two years of the nearby wreck of the brig Falconer and reflects the same stretch of shifting sand and swift currents that claimed numerous vessels through the 19th century.
