The Vessel and Her Loss
Sevona was a steel-hulled lake freighter built in 1890, originally named Emily P. Weed and renamed in 1897. On September 2, 1905, seeking shelter from a violent storm among the Apostle Islands, she struck a shoal northeast of Sand Island and broke in two. Seven crew members drowned within sight of shore and of the lighthouse keepers who watched the disaster unfold; the same storm sank a second vessel in the islands that day. The wreck was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.
