The Vessel and Her Loss
Built in Germany in 1961 as the reefer Holstenau, the vessel was later sold to American owners and renamed Ocean Freeze, then Scott Mason-Chaite. After years tied up amid unpaid fines and failed legislative efforts to compensate her owner, she was donated to the Atlantic Gamefish Foundation and scuttled north of Pacific Reef off Key Largo on July 28, 1998. She settled completely upside down, and her inverted hull now forms a distinctive, popular technical dive.
