The Vessel and Her Loss
William Pidgeon built the two-masted schooner Sardinia at Coldwater, Ontario, in 1856 for a Toronto merchant. In June 1900, arriving light from Milwaukee to load wood at Hedgehog Harbor, she was winched out to her anchors when a northwest wind rose. The gale broke her shortened chains and drove her onto the rocky shore, stoving her bottom. Plum Island lifesavers could not refloat her, and she was stripped and abandoned.
