The Vessel and Her Loss
Built in 1871, the wooden barge S.C. Baldwin was southbound from Sturgeon Bay with stone in tow of the tug Torrent in August 1908. Passing Kewaunee in a storm, she began taking water and around 3 a.m. capsized, unnoticed by the tug until sunrise. One man clung to her hull and was rescued; when the towline was cut she righted and sank. Captain George Heim, in a life jacket, was found hours later by the steamer Caroline. Jacob Witgen drowned.
