The Vessel and Her Loss
RMS Bohemian was completing a transatlantic crossing from Liverpool to Portland, Maine, in February 1864 when she struck Alden Rock off Cape Elizabeth in poor visibility. Forty-two people died, most of them Irish emigrants who had almost reached their new home. Cargo worth roughly a million dollars scattered across Casco Bay, and the wreck remains one of the deadliest disasters ever recorded in the bay.
