The Vessel and Her Loss
The Peter Iredale was a four-masted steel barque built around 1890. On October 25, 1906, under Captain H. Lawrence, she ran ashore on Clatsop Spit near Fort Stevens while approaching the Columbia River bar. No lives were lost, and the ship was abandoned as a total loss. Her rusting skeleton remains visible on the beach today, making it one of the most photographed shipwrecks in the country.
