The Vessel and Her Loss
Alanson Gilmore built the two-masted schooner Peoria at Black River, Ohio, in 1854. On November 10, 1901, carrying 140,000 feet of hardwood lumber from Charlevoix, she sheltered in Baileys Harbor from a storm. Both anchors dragged overnight and she went up on the beach near the range lights. The life-saving station rescued her six crew; her upper hull broke up and she was stripped on November 12, ending 47 years of service.
