The Vessel and Her Loss
Partanna was a banking schooner built at Garnish on the Burin Peninsula during a 1930s boom in local shipbuilding. In April 1936, during what had been a bountiful fishing season, she sailed out with a crew of 25 men, most from Garnish and Grand Bank, for a spring fishing trip. She never returned, and no wreckage was ever conclusively identified. The disaster remains one of the Burin Peninsula's most remembered unsolved maritime losses.
