The Vessel and Her Loss
Nutfield was a new paddle steamer built for blockade running. On 4 February 1864, on her first run toward Wilmington, she was chased by USS Sassacus and grounded near New River Inlet. Her crew jettisoned cargo and abandoned her, and the ship was destroyed. Divers and archaeologists have since recorded her remains.
