The Vessel and Her Loss
Built in 1890, the wooden package freighter Norlond left Chicago for Milwaukee in November 1922 and put in at Racine to shelter from a gale. Leaks found there were patched, and she set out again on Monday morning. Soon after leaving she sprang a leak again, and after two hours of pumping her captain and crew took to the two lifeboats. Minutes later she sank stern first off Milwaukee's South Point with a cargo valued at $500,000. All aboard reached shore safely.
